In collaboration with the UC San Diego Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for Health Innovation (JCHI), we are leading a groundbreaking initiative to revolutionize surgical operations by optimizing surgery preference cards through data-driven innovation.
Preference cards are personalized checklists that ensure surgical teams have the right supplies and equipment for each procedure. However, creating them takes valuable time that could be spent with patients, and errors can result in unnecessary waste of resources.
Our team developed and trained a predictive model on three surgical specialties—urology, surgical oncology, and colorectal surgery. It’s designed to guarantee each surgical procedure has the optimal set of tools and preparations by predicting what will go on the procedure’s preference card. Doing so reduces the risk of complications and minimizes the need for rescheduled surgeries.
This project is much more than just introducing new technology; it is about setting a new standard in surgical care. It demonstrates the invaluable role Responsible Data Science plays in enhancing patient outcomes and transforming the way surgical care is delivered across the UC San Diego health system. We are paving the way for innovative healthcare solutions, aiming to make a significant and lasting impact on the quality of patient care.
